What happens to your plan if ModernRetire goes away

Last updated: 2026-08-02

ModernRetire is built by one person. You are planning thirty years ahead with software from a business that has existed for months. That is a fair thing to be uneasy about, and it is a bigger practical risk to you than a data breach, so here is the plan.

Your plan is a file, not a hostage

Export your complete plan as JSON at any time, from inside the app. The format is documented and stable; it imports back into ModernRetire, and it is readable without it. Export works whether or not your subscription is active, and it will keep working if ModernRetire stops being developed.

Keep a copy. The strongest guarantee here is not a promise about future behavior — it is that you already have the data.

If ModernRetire shuts down

If I decide to stop running ModernRetire, I commit to:

90 days notice by email to every account holder before the service goes offline.

Export stays available for the entire notice period, including for accounts with lapsed subscriptions. Nobody loses their plan because their renewal happened to fall inside the window.

No sale of your plan data. If ModernRetire's assets are ever sold or transferred, plan data is not part of what transfers. Accounts get notice and an export window first.

Deletion at the end. When the service goes offline, plan data is deleted rather than archived.

What this page does not promise

ModernRetire is not guaranteed to exist in thirty years. No financial planning product can promise that, including the ones with buildings and staff.

What is guaranteed is that your plan is portable, that you can leave with it at any moment, and that if the service ends you will hear about it with time to act.

Why this page exists

Most software companies say nothing about this, because saying nothing is easier than making a commitment. If you are trusting a small product with a long-term plan, the shutdown scenario is the one you should ask about, and you should expect a specific answer rather than reassurance.
